Cloisonné is an age-old method of embellishing metal objects by creating separate compartments, called "cloisons" in French, on the metal surface using soldered or attached gold or silver wires, which then get filled with colored enamel paste or, historically, with cut gemstones or glass, resulting in a multi-colored design where the metal dividers remain visible in the finished piece;this enamel paste is later fired in a kiln to set the colors.
